Motherhood

Motherhood
is the one job
that I worked at the longest

still working when needed
always thinking about work

and the hardest

it’s still hard sometimes
like when I have to say goodbye
does it ever stop being hard?

and still feel like I never got it right.

And now I know how my own mother felt
when she would catch the glint
of ridicule in my eyes
I’m glad we both
lived long enough
to share that moment
when it was all
forgiven.
Now I know how my own mother felt
when she saw her own children
married and happy
married and unhappy
married with children
unmarried with children
I’m glad we both lived long enough
to share those moments
to bawl like a baby in her arms
over long distance phone lines
I’m glad we both lived long enough
to share that moment
when it was all
forgiven.

About Sharon

Like anyone who lives long enough, I have experienced great loss and survived. I am convinced that my survival depends on my own participation in creating the reality I am living in, and I am determined to be a thoughtful and active participant/creator. These writings are my way of documenting that creation. As the song goes, "I will survive!" I chose the title Staying Vertical because I find that surviving isn't just staying on my feet physically. Keeping my thoughts and emotions on the vertical plane keeps me alive and moving forward. Thanks for joining me!

This is just a lovely Mothers Day tribute Sharon. You are very talented. I enjoy reading your interesting Staying Vertical vignettes. Your creative juices are flowing! Happy Mothers Day from one mother to another! It was my toughest job in life, but worth it.

I’ve just seen this and had a good cry. Mom died 7 years ago today. I’m feeling it keenly and your words strike home for me, touching me in a very private place. That’s real poetry.
